*triumphant Sonic Unleashed theme plays*
An "E" for spelling...
*less majestic counterpart to Sonic Unleashed theme plays*
I've only watched the first part so far but as a concept I like it! Not sure about the story though:
"Your friend Tails and your girlfriend Amy... ARE DEAD!"
"She's NOT my girlfriend!"
Yeah... That's real classy, Sonic!
If Sega don't stop raping my childhood obsession, I'm going to create a Sonic rip-off and show them how to do it.
HMMMM?!?
It just reminded me of how awesome the whole sonic concept used to before any of the 3d games.
It seriously has so much potential especially on the powerful consoles available today.
Huge environments, blistering speeds, and non stop action... it seems so simple yet hasn't really worked yet.
If honestly don't see segas logic with sonic at the moment...
Oh and Zorg, please please change the title picture, that shitty sonic is so depressing. Get some blue sky up in this shit yo'.
tl;dr - i liked
Barring the slow-mo sections, this is just Sonic Adventure.
Also, I'm not sure how well thought out it is. For example, if the player can only follow the brown paths as in the video, then it's just an Unleashed-style on-rails affair. If the player can go anywhere (as the level design suggests), then what stops the player from just running along the hills "as the crow flies" and avoiding all the actual gameplay?
Also, since all the jumping is done from the back view, how does the player judge distance? Adding a homing attack would make the game effectively play itself, and moving the camera would inevitably lead to glitching.
Unleashed was pretty good, take off that stupid header Zorg.. makes us look like a bunch of grown man playing kids games.
...oh wait
As for these videos, man.. some great ideas in there. With some work by a talented development team (say.. Am2) this could potentially turn out fucking sweet!
Although the "free-roaming" thing doesn't feel quite right.. But a great idea overall never the less.
^This. I have a friend who clamors for someone to try a fully free-roaming Sonic, and this is why it wouldn't work. Plus, it would not be Sonic anymore but instead Jak & Daxter/Mario 64/insert generic 3D open world platformer of your poison here. Ironically, I find the adventure fields of Sonic Adventure awesome to goof off in, but those are in contained doses, not an entire game.
"Adding a homing attack would make the game effectively play itself"
You almost have a point with this, but I don't see a problem with having it. It's not like it takes a ton of processes out of the flow of gameplay when done right.
Admittedly, Tails and Knuckles in SA1/Knuckles and Rouge in SA2 got along rather well without it, but, they played a little differently...more to the point, a largely straight-up, few-or-no-frills conversion of the 2D mechanics - potential for high speeds and all - into 3D space is plain dysfunctional. I believe that's a fact they came to in the making of Sonic Adventure, which led them to creating the Homing Attack. It's not as unecessary as it may seem.
Also, Sonic 3D Blast (Flickies' Island for you Yurop-eans) didn't have these problems because it was isometric, but (despite my enjoyment of the game) I take it none of you especially want to go back to that.
Sonic Unleashed was not great. Very sloppy in fact. Almost every single problem with it feeds back into that damn EXP system in some way. They cut a lot of corners.
Sonic CD 3d remake = good
Sonic with sunglasses = okay
Sonics running animation = okay
"His world" istead of Richard Jaques "Super Sonic Racing"
=> EPIC FAIL
1) It's 3D
2) It has quick time events
Sonic Unleashed was 15% good (the daytime stages) so let's be happy with that.
