UK:RESISTANCE 'main page'
On its third week on sale in the UK, PlayStation3 sold 17,000 units. Nintendo's Wii sold 25,000 units in the same time, according to official Chart Track sales figures we're not supposed to have. But have.

Considering Wii is sold out everywhere and unwanted PS3s are piled high all over the place, this a comprehensive win for Nintendo and the icing on PS3's tombstone.

PS3 WEEK 3: SALES OF DOOM

A proper web site will be along to confirm these figures are correct shortly with proper research and maybe a quote from Chart Track, just in case you don't believe us [link will go here]. The ball's back in your court, Threespeech.

F.A.O. SONY FANS:
If you like Sony or work for Sony and would like to put a positive 'spin' on this story, please attempt to do so in the Comments field below. We haven't wet ourselves laughing for 26 years and this could be the day. You could maybe say that all the potential PS3 owners spent their money on Easter eggs last week, and PS3 sales will pick up next week. Or you could say that it's OK because PS3 is more expensive and sales will pick up when Sony hacks the price down. Whatever makes you feel better about wasting that 425 quid.

this is just a nintendo hack job pr site. sony has sold 5 million ps3s worldwide and will sell millions in europe. the reason the stores have so many is because the demand is so high and sony fixed their production problems. how else do you explain stores ordering hundreds of units if the demand isn't there?
Blogger slim1945 said...
Wow according to chart tracks maths there's less than 5,000 PS3's left in the UK, (haven't heard of any more shipments coming in) wonder where all that unsold stock is coming from, maybe they're flying them over in stealth bombers to avoid radar.

As can be seen from the sales figures the PLAYSTATION® 3 is obviously doing exceedingly well in Europe. With the record breaking UK launch, it is impossible that the PLAYSTATION® 3 could maintain that figure on a weekly basis. As can be seen from the Stock situation all over Europe SONY™ is at the forefront of consumer relations when compared with Nintendo or Microsoft, as our constant flow of consoles proves. Here at SONY™ we are aware of the concern of cirtain websites, such as yourself. And are doing our best to increase stock to reduce shortages as is seen with Nintendo's Wii Console.

Unrivaled Performance with the introduction of Cell Processor and many Advanced Technologies, and backwards compatible with PLAYSTATION® and PLAYSTATION® 2 ensures that PLAYSTATION® 3 sales are exceptional.

The PLAYSTATION® 3 IS the home console of the future. Experience the future today;

5 reasons to buy a PS3

1. Sony will lose $240 on each console sold, if you don't buy any games or Blu-ray films.

2. It's selling so badly it could be considered a limited edition collector's item in the near future.

3. They're more fun to throw things at than coconuts.

4. Buying one would help your defence when trying to plead insanity.

5. I'd rather give my greedy bitch ex-wife half a PS3 than cash.

Did UK get additional PS3s since launch?

I know the launch estimate was about 220k in the UK.
Three week sales estimates were 165k, 28k, 17k = 210k

Every report I've seen on the UK is stores still have plenty, a lot more then the 10k they should have left.

Either the UK got a lot more then 220k at launch, they've already had a second shipment, or the sales figures are wildly exagerated.

Speaking of Final Fantasy... does the PS3 have release dates for any killer apps yet (or are they waiting for next Christmas to try and get punters buying?)

I can't wait for the next Killzone!

I want to stand in Virgin on Oxford Street shouting loudly "See it looks fuck all like the CGI demo from E3 doesn't it?" and doing my I-told-you-so-cha-cha.

There are a bunch of print shops round the corner in Goodge Street area, would be fun to see 9'x4' posters / people t-shirts with choice 'E3 Demo' and 'Actual Game' screenshots on them side by side.

Might be one way to get a free 360 '1337' out of Microsoft...

sorry once again for posting something vaguely pro-sony, but i would just like to point out that if sony reaally do have a disaster with ps3 then they will probably take down a chunk of the industry too. It would be ironic if sony kill sega for a second time - by being shit this time. We should be campaining to keep chav money in gaming - im sure sony would shift a few more if they did a burberry edition.

Why do people keep rattling on about buying one just because "Sony lose $240" or whatever one every one sold? Do they not realise that they lose even more than that unsold because they don't recoup the 200 odd quid from the sale, bringing there total profit to a whopping -£400 or so per every dusty box on the shelf?
Blogger Friday said...
andy, I know what you mean. One unplesent aspect is that the cost and unfounded hype of PS3 might turn a lot of people off gaming for a generation all together.

The 360 and Wii will definately pick up a lot of that slack, but not all of it I fear (so ingrained is the link between the'Playstation' brand with 'gaming' in popular culture).

At least the X-Box brand has remained solid throughout, and the global popularity of the DS and novelty of the Wii input system have done much to awaken a lot of people who sleepwalked into getting a PS2 that there are other options.

Sony have at least helped the cause by also fucking up the Playstation brand with the PSP though.

I bought a PSP, I really liked it apart from the fact the UMD media was a stupid choice for a portable media format (crappy loading times, often didn't awaken from 'sleep' mode).

They should have sold games online and allowed you to transfer them to the PSP from your PC/Mac from the start (and not through a PS3). Muppets.

I gave mine away and am back to the GBA SP, a common story in the office.
Blogger amagni said...
Dash Krimson is exactly right, the PS3 is sony's Saturn.

Think about it...
PS1 = Master System, entering the market, grabbing sales from nintendo.
PS2 = Megadrive, great success, lots of games, third party support.
PS3 = Saturn, too expensive, hard to program for.

so therefore...

PS4 = Dreamcast, smaller, cheaper, more powerful, better online features and ultimately doomed by its predecessor scaring off developers and retailers.

And so the whole ghastly cycle continues...
Blogger Ooshka said...
OK, so it's nabbed from Kotaku, but they've nicked enough stuff from UK:R in the past.

See if you can guess what this is about..

'It's very satisfying for us to see that our close planning with retail and channel partners has ensured that all consumers wanting to get their hands on a PS3, whether they pre-ordered or not, were able to. With the PS3 now realised, the strong consumer support to date indicates that we've had a successful platform launch and are at a great starting position for us to grow and develop the PS3 platform.'

You guessed it, it's the natural reaction of the SCENZ general manager to selling 4,835 in the opening week in New Zealand.

I'll repeat that. 4,835 consoles sold IN THE OPENING FUCKING WEEK. According to Kotaku, that's respectable in a country of 4 million. Given Sony's claims they would rule the world, I was say that was actually BOLLOCKS.

Andy, it's my honest opinion that the industry NEEDS a huge chunk cut the fuck out of it.

We need a second big videogame crash. Pure and simple. If Sony's failure can go one step to bringing that... Good.

Yes, it might take out some companies that don't deserve to die. But something has to happen to get the videogames industry out of the stagnancy its been in for over the last 5 years.
Blogger andy said...

Come the end of the world/industry crash, EA will launch a console and rule the entire industry, buhahahaha!

I was in GAME Manchester yesterday and the PFY said the stock was a combination of terrible sales (Almost all launch sales were people trying to Ebay a profit out of the PS3.) and good supply. He said they have already received new stock of PS3 but because they can't shift the original stock they just end up piling them high. in his view Sony has great supply but vastly over estimated the demand.

Come on Nintendo... I still haven't managed to find a Wii

Blogger Mentski said...
Andy, you've missed the point so badly that you're in another country to it.

EA and Sony are the companies that will bring on a crash the way things are going. If they did indeed survive, even they would finally have to change the way they operate and what they churn out. God forbid EA releasing original software, eh. They used to once, you know.

Lets look at what happened to their 80's counterparts. Atari's hardware division spent years trying to reclaim lost glories, floundered, bought by Infogrammes, and is now used as a software label, their arcade division has been passed around by everyone and their mum (who owns it now? Midway?), and Mattel (after several years of totally mismarketing the NES in europe for Nintendo), got the fuck out of the business completley and went back to what they are good at: Making Barbie dolls.

Treasure (Incidentally, what have they released recently, anyway? The last good thing I got from them was the GBA Guardian Heroes - an update of a 10 year old game) and other teams like it may have to struggle to survive. Yes, thats true. But they are also the same companies who will have a chance to inject something new into the industry in the same way Sega and Nintendo took over from the big guns in the 80's.

(Cunningly, other small companies of the day then, like Activision and EA, have become the cunts of today... That's irony for you.)

Even then, if they did go down, the people working for a company don't myseriously die when a company goes bankrupt you know. They might go on to bigger and better things, invigorating the industry anyway. What's in a name, after all.

My point still stands, the companies that have stagnated the industry have to fall, and someone else has to rise.

Shit or get off the pot.

Blogger andy said...
Mentski - well thats the optomistic view, but from what i remember of the eighties it was pretty dire. the big guns simply held on by being ultra conservative about their releases, so you had companies like ocean grimly applying the same platforming formula to a wave of movie licenses whilst people like gargoyle and hewson fucked off and wrote software for accountants and insurance companies.

EA and Sony won't suddenly get creative if the market flounders, it will be more likely that they drop anything even slightly commercially risky. I agree that there is a level of stagnation in the amount of mass market shovelware being produced - but I can't see the PS3 failing as a platform changing that. All it will mean is that companies that have already invested large amounts of their budget developing for PS3 get shafted and the investment money goes somewhere else. ie shovelware on the systems that the average punter can afford to buy or out of the games industry full stop.

Do you think that's somehow clever? The Wii is priced so low largely because Nintendo were hoping that a cheaper console would outsell a more expensive one. That's the whole point of showing how poorly Sony's plan has worked. That doesn't change the facts; that is the fucking facts! It's like if you said
"Wow, big deal, who'd have thought a console made out of nitro glycerine would be outsold by one made of plastic, silicon, and metal", after months of people saying maiking a console from an explosive, dangerous, liquid was a bad idea. That's why we're bothering to talk about it. Sony made a stupid mistake charging so much money and now they are selling poorly because of it.
That would be, stay with me here, the point.

If you really can't get over the fact that the PS3 is an expensive unwanted failure orders of magnitude beyond what you'd imagined in your wildest dreams, just punctuate the REAL (Sega) news with regular updates as to just how badly the PS3 is failing. Make them gleeful if you like, just stop baiting these GameFAQers into responding.

Why shouldn't Nintendo market their console for £179.99. Even at that price they make a profit from each sale unlike Sony and Microsoft did at the start. So it makes perfect business sense to give it a reasonable price tag.

Yes Sony as a company are gits, and there have been countless cock ups with the PS3.

BUT are you people really so deluded that you don't see the MS are just as bad. If the PS3 crubles and falls then we wont see any further price cuts on the X360 and the X1080 will cost £500 and only be 20% more powerful!!!

The Wii isn't a part of this it's a totally different market. Not to mention that Nintendo are being complete wankers anyway. Metroid prime 3 and Mario Galaxy were no dout finished months ago. But because the Wii is so successful Ninten are holding them back until sales start dropping off. Not to mention that for what it is the Wii is an over priced hunk of junk anyway!

It seems to me one of the biggest PR flaws for Sony is not havng a 1st party mascot, I think it would give Sony the personality it clearly lacks.

Reliance on people's patience for 3rd party releases to sell your product is a huge risk, and a heavy burden on Square an Konami no doubt.
Nintendo have several, Mario, Metroid, Kirby and Zelda.
Sega have Sonic, Samba da amigo, Nights(albeit old).
Xbox has Halo, I still dont know what his face looks like, but hey you at least know when you see Halo, you think Xbox.

People need something they know at launch and not be forced to take a risk on titles or series they've never heard of.
People who bought a 360 for RR6 are'nt exactly gonna regret it because RR7 is on PS3, and has a few more cars or whatever.

So imagine my mirth when at launch weekend I saw at least 100 PS3s in two shops and a supermarket, in addition to the ten in the small Virgin Megastore.

Meanwhile, the Wii is selling out as soon as they get stock in, even in shops where they're sold for the same price as the PS3.

I used to enjoy this website, but it's no longer a thriving hive of wit and observational comedy based on a subject dear to me, i.e. gaming... it's now just obsessive, fanboy-esque rants about how rubbish PS3 is... when in fact, PS3 will be a damn fine console, is far more powerful than the 360, and is nowhere near as bad as your puke-tinted spectacles are making it out to be. I've been playing games for 25 years, and I've seen how the technology has evolved... and PS3 is at the forefront of something new and big. I'm no longer impressed with this site's bully-boy antics, to be frank. Grow up a bit, and focus on the fucking games, not picking holes in something you don't understand and have got entirely wrong. You've got the wit and the talent, but your focus has gone all wrong. Sort it out.
Blogger Paul said...
Im so terribly sorry to point it out dear chap, but the concept of a 'successful console' is not dependent solely on advanced hardware, but a heady mix of hardware ("More FLOPS than j00"), software ("OMG BMXXX WITH SWEATMAPPING ALGOJIZMS"), installed user base ("All my mates have one and I wank alone") and feelgood factor ("Ive seen this in every goddamn magazine and I feel incomplete without one now").

There have been many examples of what by your standard could be deemed a 'damn fine console'; Atari Jaguar (may it rest in peace), Atari Lynx, uh... Atari 5200.... all consoles that outperformed the rest of the market at the time but failed to inspire the correct cocktail of happiness and joy that the SNES/Megadrive/PS1/PS2 managed. Damn fine consoles sure, but nobody has one, and it has fuck all to do with supply restrictions.

MS, though I dont like them very much to tell the truth, have actually made a good, successful console. XBOX Live is actually an ok-ish community tool, despite the sub-Steam commercial drapery. The Wii, despite being a souped-up GameCube that looks like an iPod is actually cracking fun to play and after buying one you dont feel like youve been raped by a gorilla, which is always a plus in my book.

Sony have made a monumental cock-up, and it is understandably satisfying to see their avian flu-ridden hens come home to roost. It's like seeing that annoying twat down the pub finally pick a fight with someone who kicks his fucking teeth in; Sony have earned their justified and inevitable come-uppance after years of capricious mediapathic arrogance and blatant lying.

Lying makes baby Jesus cry.
