UK:RESISTANCE 'main page'
They look too old and fucked to have made any BIG MONEY and be properly famous. In fact, it looks like they were dragged out of community housing and forced into a nostalgic reunion tour by their manager at gunpoint to pay the crack dealers off.

Unless it's the other ones out of Red Hot Chilli Peppers who don't usually stand near the camera. Or Kiss but without the make-up? Or The Ramones before they mostly died?

Or the Beatles

"Spotted in New York, front of a 'Guitar Center' shop. I have no idea who those guys are, but maybe they were cool and famous in the 80s. Pretty much like Sonic - Omar."

Considering Sonic 1 came out in 1991, Sonic must be so cool that he retroactively radiates coolness back into the '80s.

It's The Ramones for fucks sake.

Definitely The Ramones - evidence here:

It's Marky Ramone wearing the T-Shirt, and he's one of the few living Ramones too. You might be able to email him about the shirt using the email address he posted on the official site a few years back - marky4321@aol.com
If you're wondering, the Ramones were shit in the 80s, but pretty good (for a band who couldn't play) in the 70s.

What can we expect from the future when kids can't recognize the Ramones?

Kiss without make-up? Man someones read the grauniad this morning, Paul Stanley of Kiss is in fact a massive Nintendo fan FWIW, anyway as others have said, it's Da Brothers who in their day were very good and pretty darn influential.

How can you not identify the Ramones?! Despite their imensely famous back catalogue they're also iconic musicians. They're the ones who started the drainpipe jeans and Converse look that still stands as the unbeatable benchmark of coolness. Not that Indie kids look anywhere near as cool as the Ramones did.

And that's George Clinton out of Funkadelic on the left in case it transpires in forthcoming photos that he has some Sonic paraphenalia about him.

Are you guys flaming Omar or Zorg with his faux-ignorance.
Blogger JimJam said...
Oh dear.

Minus one million Kudos points for Cmdr_Zorg.
Blogger bilal said...
Poor Zorg, maybe if you just said you havent' the foggiest who they are, you'd be saved from the seething poison being flung your way :(

Alternatively, maybe Zorg *does* know who they are, and was just toying with us readers on account of Omar's not knowing who they are (and that appalling Sonic error).

It could've be worse, Zorg, you could've been the Swill Man :(

zmugu: Zorg's possible replacement. Zmugu knows who the Ramones are at least
Blogger weatherbox said...
Or maybe Zorg just doesn't give a shit about the Ramones. I think we can forgive him for that. It's not obligatory to like them although they are and ace group. Also re: The guy who suggested contacting Marky about the T-shirt - please somebody do that. He might overlook the incurrent disregard of asking him something non Ramones related and either a.) spiel off about his love for Sonic or b.) not remember the t-shirt and have better things to do. He also played in a band called Richard Hell and the Voidoids who are another band to check out - I suggest the album Blank Generation but not Destiny street because it's a bit crap.

Well, I feel I should clear up this controversy.

I kind of guessed it was The Ramones while writing it, due to that very sickly skinny one at the front-right and the miserable one at the back-left looking very familiar and about the right age, plus the photo being spotted in New York.

After writing it I looked them up on Google, realised it was indeed The Ramones, guessed that it might make me look a bit "uncool" by saying I didn't know who they were, but couldn't be bothered changing the original text.

And I tried listening to them about 10 years ago and didn't really like it very much.

I am currently listening to Johnny Cash. He does songs about shooting women and going to prison. You'd all like him very much, just skip the gospel period of the late-1970s and early-80s.

Proud to be uncool!

Consider this:
Someday Sonic may be wearing a shirt depicting The Ramones.

Johnny Cash's "gospel period" ran from around 1955 to his death in 2003. "Hymns from Johnny Cash" came out in 1959, but Columbia weren't up for letting him do another for the sake of both image and sales, as wasn't Sam Phillips at Sun who discovered him. It wasn't until he got the end-of-the-line deal with Mercury in the early '80s that he could start putting his Jesus-stuff back on vinyl again. Which of course didn't sell well either, but he didn't give a fuck by that time. Even his later really cool American Recordings stuff with Rick Rubin is peppered with 'spirituals', as he would call that type of song.

Who are the Ramones, anyway?

If someone would be so kind as to copy/paste the wiki entry here, that'd be much appreciated

Or Sonic will just have a t-shirt based on The Ramones logo:
