That’s 94% of games that you’ve just described there, Giger. I reckon I have 7 or 8 games with exactly that plot line (except not so fleshed-out as your description). Did it have forklift driving, and lots of looking round shops? They’re the key Shenmue identifiers.

My Dreamcast still works and is still hooked up to the tv, think the last game I played on it was either Powerstone 2 or a bus driving simulator.
Probably not the place to admit it but I don’t think I’ve ever played Shenmue. ‘Think’ I tried Shenmue 2 and got bored – Is that likely or am I thinking of a different game? It’s quite possible I’m thinking of an entirely different game…there was something about some monks/ninjas/secret society of nasty guys and a stormy night and possibly a dad being killed.

I’ve tried replaying Shenmue, but the pain of knowing there’s not going to be a sequel usually means I stop somewhere in the middle. I got up to disc 3 of Shenmue II when Kikizo made up their story about Shenmue III being “nearly done except for all of the programming” but I gave up not long after.

Mine is the only console I have plugged into the TV. Not that I use it or the TV any more.

Speaking of the DC, has anyone ever played through Shenmue more than once? It was good and all, but I tried to play it a second time and felt like I’d rather be in a coma than have to go through it again.

Mine still works and I have a vintage 1998 Toshiba TV to play it on. Hooray for being a tight arsed unemployed luddite!

My Dreamcast still works… well my Japanese launch Dreamcast died earlier this year, but I bought another one. I had to replace the case though, judging from the damage the previous owner had tied the Dreamcast to his car and dragged it along the road. It was probably Ken Kutaragi driving.
